If you’re looking for a fresh take on workplace comedies, try… Mythic Quest
Keywords: workplace comedy, video games, ensemble
Watch if you like: Silicon Valley, It’s Always Sunny, Community
Jenni’s Rating: A-
Mythic Quest is a smart and lovable workplace comedy about the dysfunctional studio behind an extremely popular video game. From the minds of It’s Always Sunny creators Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day, and writer Megan Ganz, this sitcom is bolstered by quick, witty writing and an incredible ensemble cast.
Unlike sitcoms that require a few episodes (or entire seasons) to fall into a groove, Mythic Quest knows exactly what it is from day one. It gets funny fast and gives itself plenty of room to evolve both its storylines and its characters into something three-dimensional and — sometimes surprisingly — moving.
At least once per season, the show includes a standalone bottle episode that’s more drama than comedy and usually deals with the impossibility of creating lasting art that can stand up to its original vision. This theme pervades the standard episodes as well, though usually in a more lighthearted manner. In fact, the main sources of conflict in the series often arise from a satirization of the classic battles between “creatives” and “suits” or another common binary in corporate offices: “practical” vs. “visionary”.
Bottom line: Mythic Quest is hilarious, self-aware, fun, and just downright worthwhile. If you’ve been looking for a sitcom to add to your rotation, definitely give this a try.

Not Dead Yet
Keywords: comedy, heartwarming, ghosts
Watch if you like: The Good Place, Ghosts, Younger
Jess’s Rating: C
Not Dead Yet follows Nell Serrano (Gina Rodriguez), a woman who is returning to her career as a journalist after an ill-fated relationship took her life temporarily off course. Now that she’s back, the only gig she can get is as an obituary writer. Things take an odd turn when she realizes that she can see and hear the ghosts of the deceased people that she’s writing about.
Gina Rodriguez proved that she is an incredible leading woman on Jane the Virgin, and it was past time that she head up another primetime show. Rounding out the experienced cast, Not Dead Yet also has Lauren Ash (Superstore) and Hannah Simone (New Girl) on board as Nell’s boss and co-worker, respectively. Unfortunately, this show isn’t worthy of all that comedic star power.
It’s hard not to compare the show to CBS’s Ghosts, since the main character can also speak with spirits that no one else can see. But while Ghosts is both heartwarming and hilarious, Not Dead Yet isn’t either of those things. Its attempts at poignancy don’t quite ring true, and so far, I have not laughed once. I’m not going to write this show off entirely yet, because I’m a huge fan of Gina Rodriguez and I have a hard time believing that a show with her, Lauren Ash, and Hannah Simone won’t end up being funny… I’m just giving it some time to get there.
