📺 Tulsa King, Mayfair Witches, and 6 new things to watch
Happy almost weekend! Some news that will surprise no one: Abbott Elementary was recently renewed for a third season <3. Slightly more surprising: the Golden Globes happened on Tuesday, and neither of us watched. And in abiding by the rule of threes, our last bit of news is that there are now only ~2 weeks left until our anniversary (and subscriber goal deadline), so, if you have someone in your life that always asks for TV recs, please click that orange button below and share Double Take with them. Our thoughts on brand new streaming content, and where you can watch.
Tulsa King
Keywords: mafia, action, western, drama
Watch if you like: Yellowstone, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire
Jess’s Rating: C+
It’s Taylor Sheridan’s world and we’re just living in it. Along with his hit series Yellowstone and its spin-offs, Mayor of Kingstown starring Jeremy Renner and Tulsa King starring Sylvester Stallone both premiered in late 2022. And he has five(!!!) more shows currently in development for Paramount+.
Tulsa King follows Dwight Manfredi (Stallone), a New York mafia capo who gets relegated by his crime family to Tulsa, Oklahoma after being released from a 25-year prison sentence. Clearly not reformed from his old ways, he quickly becomes embroiled in criminal activity despite his new rural residence.
While this series is unlike Yellowstone in many ways, it too features a tough, masculine, morally ambiguous patriarch who doesn’t always follow the law. Although I find his acting choices to be questionable, I have to admit that Stallone is fun to watch; it feels like this role was crafted for him.
Although the show is not as funny as it aims to be, and can be cheesy at times, it is fast-paced and engaging. I don’t think I’ll be motivated to watch the second season, but it was an easy binge.

Mayfair Witches
Keywords: supernatural thriller, Anne Rice, drama
Watch if you like: The Magicians, Interview with the Vampire, Charmed
Jenni’s Rating: B-
Okay, so I am a sucker for witchy dramas and for stories in which the main character has some mysterious past they need to uncover. This new adaptation of Anne Rice’s novel trilogy, Lives of the Mayfair Witches, ticks both of those boxes.
The series begins by following a few threads in different timelines, the main and most important of which is that of the protagonist, Dr. Rowan Fielding, played by Alexandra Daddario (White Lotus, Percy Jackson). Rowan is a brilliant pediatric neurosurgeon who loves her adoptive mother, but otherwise lives a relatively introverted, secluded life alone on her boat. She’s always naturally distanced herself from others, focused on practicing medicine and preoccupied with wondering who her parents were and where she came from. When ~weird~ things start to happen — seemingly caused by her emotions — Rowan realizes she may have some strange, potentially sinister power, and it becomes more important than ever to figure out who she really is.
I’m aware I’m basing this hunch off the only episode out right now, but I’m fairly optimistic that I will watch the rest of the first season. Daddario is definitely the best part of the series so far, although there’s also plenty of promise in the plot and the storytelling if the first hour is anything to go by. If you like dark, spooky, mesmerizing shows, give Mayfair Witches a shot.
