Happy weekend. It’s officially fall and we’re back with a collection of somewhat seasonally appropriate monthly favorites. There’s a lot of stuff we’d love to share that just won’t fit in our usual Thursday newsletter. Some of that stuff is here. Read on for a special collection of podcast, book, and miscellaneous other recs from your trusty Double Take duo.

Jenni: I’m in full cozy mode these days, and have begun working my way down my “fall essential viewing” list of shows and movies. In addition to the two mentioned by Jess below (both extremely great choices for autumn, by the way), I’ve been rewatching season one of Gilmore Girls (no one is surprised) and have plans to revisit Fantastic Mr. Fox, the best Wes Anderson movie, in my humble opinion, later this evening.
Jess: In the spirit of the autumn/spooky season, Jenni and I watched When Harry Met Sally (very cute) and Over the Garden Wall (amazing & original miniseries) together this weekend.
I’ve also been catching up on theatrical releases that were put on Peacock: The movie Vengeance exceeded my expectations, highly recommend checking that one out. Jurassic World: Dominion, however was much worse than expected, even with low expectations going into it.
Jenni: I realized a few weeks ago that I had a bunch of episodes of The Allusionist podcast downloaded from a road trip and hadn’t actually gotten around to listening to them. Now I’m working my way through those on my morning walks. Short but sweet episodes about language and all its quirks with host Helen Zaltzman. This show will forever be in my podcast rotation.
Jess: I recently finished The Good Sister (Sally Hepworth) audiobook — it’s an original “thriller” with great voice acting and surprising twists.
Jenni: I’m actually still reading Fox and I: An Uncommon Friendship by Catherine Raven. I’m liking it but haven’t had the time or urge to sit down and finish the last 50 pages or so. The Idiot by Elif Bautman just arrived for me from the library as well; I’m excited to see if it lives up to the hype.
Jess: On Jenni’s recommendation, I finally read House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas and had a similar reaction — it’s flawed but fun, and I had no strong emotional attachment to the story or the characters.
I also read Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas (which was very bad and ruined reading for me for maybe 3 months) and Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James — a good supernatural thriller if you’re into that sort of thing.
Jenni: Excited to bring Glühwein (aka mulled wine) back into the rotation this autumn/fall. It’s really easy to make and and veryyy festive. Jess and I had some for our When Harry Met Sally viewing this weekend and it really amped up the cozy vibes.
This apple cider loaf cake and this sunken apple and honey cake are also currently duking it out for top apple-based baked good in my kitchen.
Jess: I make Sally’s Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins every year when the weather gets cold. The recipe requires zero baking prowess but tastes fantastic.
