Still Up
Keywords: British, comedy, quirky
Watch if you like: Social Distance, Lovesick, Crashing
Jenni’s Rating: B-
Still Up follows the late-night relationship of two friends united by insomnia: free-spirited illustrator and mother, Lisa (Antonia Thomas) and socially anxious, agoraphobic journalist, Danny (Craig Roberts). While the world sleeps, they stay connected, have weird adventures, and talk for hours over FaceTime or text…but never in person.
This show ticks a lot of boxes for me — it’s British, it stars two incredibly charming actors, it’s potentially (definitely) a rom-com of sorts — and I was really hoping it would be a home run from day one. Unfortunately, while the first four episodes are cute and Roberts and Thomas are lovely to watch bicker and banter, something isn’t meshing quite right. I don’t know if it’s the writing or the pacing; it honestly might be both, wrapped up in the inherent difficulty of creating a proper flow when your costars only interact on video chat.
Ineffable hitch aside, Still Up is an enjoyable watch. The series is mainly light and quippy in tone, with definite sitcom energy, especially thanks to some wacky supporting characters and slapstick-style gags. And, like most sitcoms, it likely needs time to endear us to the characters before their quirks can hit full stride. Am I a little worried that the 8-episode first season won’t allow enough time for relationships to flesh out and meaningful arcs to be fulfilled? Yeah. But while a little uneven, Still Up has potential. It’s a good choice if you want something new and unserious to watch.

Wolf Like Me
Keywords: drama-comedy, rom-com, supernatural
Watch if you like: Based on a True Story, Teen Wolf, The End of the F***ing World
Jess’s Rating: C+
Wolf Like Me is a drama-comedy about a woeful widower (Josh Gad) who begins dating a free-spirited woman (Isla Fisher) with a secret identity: she turns into a murderous wolf on every full moon. I guess it’s true that dating in yours 40s can be tough!
